CLASSICAL VS CONTEMPORARY

The substantial difference between these two different piano courses lies in the approach to playing more than in the style of music played.
Attending the Classical Piano course implies learning pieces of music in different styles from a sheet music indicating note by note, sign by sign, everything the performer should play. In this case the music is performed exactly as written.
Choosing the Contemporary Piano option implies a different approach to reading, as within this “genre” the sheet musics are usually much less detailed, often simply indicating the chords to accompany a melody and therefore leaving much space to the pupil’s tastes and creativity.

Depending on the musical style preferred and on one’s abilities and ambitions, it is possible to choose between the two options, or even to take them both to get a more complete approach to learn piano.

Let’s go through some more details within the two options.

1. Piano technique

The piano technique is the fundamental basis on which the ability of playing the piano is built. This is why I have published hundreds of piano tutorial videos, making sure the hand position could be clearly seen from different points of view, in order to make anyone able to understand and correctly imitate the gesture.

Within the piano technique course there are many aspects to be considered:

• The basic position
• The correct posture
• How to play note sequences
• The thumb passage technique
• Developing hands independence
• The legato technique
• Playing scales, parallel and reverse motion
• Learn to improve agility and achieve a faster pace

This way, practicing the exercises, anyone will be able to gradually learn how to play piano correctly.

2. Music reading

If we want to play from a classical sheet music we need to be able to read music.
For this reason, along with our piano lessons come hundreds of tutorials about reading music and performing it on the piano.

In addition, to effectively put into practice the new acquisitions, our piano tutorial include more than 300 audio files to make the pupil able to hear the exercises as well as reading them (a pdf version is available as well).

This method allows the pupil to check his own work comparing it to the audio file; it will be like having a supervising teacher at the side of the pupil.

3. Learning to play pieces of increasing difficulty level

2. Chords and harmony

Chords knowledge is fundamental to know how to play piano. It’s not enough to simply know what notes make the chords, though. It is necessary to get to know how to play them effectively on the piano. But being familiar with chords is not the only important achievement in our piano online lessons course: a good awareness of basic theory and of all harmony are indispensable requirements to be able to accompany yourself as well as to learn to improvise on the piano.
