What we can learn from the piano tutorial videos

It is important to say that there isn’t just one way to play the piano. There are different approaches to playing, depending on the styles of music and on the pupil’s direction and interest in learning.

The two main approaches to piano playing are:

  1. Classical piano
  2. Contemporary piano

Let’s try to clarify the significant difference between the two.

piano tutorial

CLASSICAL VS CONTEMPORARY

The substantial difference between these two different piano courses lies in the approach to playing more than in the style of music played.
Attending the Classical Piano course implies learning pieces of music in different styles from a sheet music indicating note by note, sign by sign, everything the performer should play. In this case the music is performed exactly as written.
Choosing the Contemporary Piano option implies a different approach to reading, as within this “genre” the sheet musics are usually much less detailed, often simply indicating the chords to accompany a melody and therefore leaving much space to the pupil’s tastes and creativity.

Depending on the musical style preferred and on one’s abilities and ambitions, it is possible to choose between the two options, or even to take them both to get a more complete approach to learn piano.

Let’s go through some more details within the two options.

CLASSICAL PIANO: how to play piano by reading a sheet music

This option implies the study of 3 fundamental subjects:

  1. Piano technique
  2. Music reading
  3. Learning to play pieces of increasing difficulty level
piano lessons

1. Piano technique

The piano technique is the fundamental basis on which the ability of playing the piano is built. This is why I have published hundreds of piano tutorial videos, making sure the hand position could be clearly seen from different points of view, in order to make anyone able to understand and correctly imitate the gesture.

Within the piano technique course there are many aspects to be considered:

  • The basic position
  • The correct posture
  • How to play note sequences
  • The thumb passage technique
  • Developing hands independence
  • The legato technique
  • Playing scales, parallel and reverse motion
  • Learn to improve agility and achieve a faster pace

This way, practicing the exercises, anyone will be able to gradually learn how to play piano correctly.

music reading

2. Music reading

If we want to play from a classical sheet music we need to be able to read music.
For this reason, along with our piano lessons come hundreds of tutorials about reading music and performing it on the piano.

In addition, to effectively put into practice the new acquisitions, our piano tutorial include more than 300 audio files to make the pupil able to hear the exercises as well as reading them (a pdf version is available as well).

This method allows the pupil to check his own work comparing it to the audio file; it will be like having a supervising teacher at the side of the pupil.

3. Learning to play pieces of increasing difficulty level

Most certainly the fundamental achievement is to be able to play a piece of music and finally be immensely gratified by it.
For this reason our piano lessons feature hundreds of piano tutorial videos that will allow the pupils to learn pieces of increasing difficulties.

Moreover, studying the music pieces allows the pupils to put into practice the technical skills they achieved through the piano technique lessons, and to extend their knowledge on different and increasingly stimulating aspects of piano playing.
Here is a shortlist of topics, just to name a few:

  • How to use the sustain pedal
  • A correct approach to dynamics
  • Interpretation of a music piece
  • Effective fingering techniques
  • How to play repeated notes
  • Natural and extended position
  • etc.

But to be honest the uniqueness of this piano online course isn’t only its potential of teaching how to perform a given piece of music. These tutorials are actually aiming to make the pupils able to be self-sufficient when learning pieces other than the ones studied in the course.

This is a very important aspect!

CONTEMPORARY PIANO: how to play piano by using chords

Learning through this particular approach to the piano gives the chance to do a number of things that wouldn’t be possible within the Classical Piano approach. Let’s go through a few together:

  • Accompanying and arranging a melody on the piano
  • Improvising on the piano
  • Accompanying your own singing
  • Playing a tune accompanying it with chords

In this case there won’t be a sheet music to read, but in order to play Contemporary Piano it will be necessary to develop other fundamental skills:

  1. Piano technique
  2. Chords and harmony
  3. Basic composition tools
  4. Most used melody accompanying techniques
  5. Most used song accompanying techniques
learn piano

1. Piano technique

People often think that in the case of contemporary piano a good piano technique is not as essential as in the case of classical piano, but this is completely wrong.
Piano technique is here equally important as in the Classical Piano course.

If you want to know more about this I suggest you check point 1. in the Classical Piano course.

chords and harmony

2. Chords and harmony

Chords knowledge is fundamental to know how to play piano. It’s not enough to simply know what notes make the chords, though. It is necessary to get to know how to play them effectively on the piano. But being familiar with chords is not the only important achievement in our piano online lessons course: a good awareness of basic theory and of all harmony are indispensable requirements to be able to accompany yourself as well as to learn to improvise on the piano.

For this reason harmony and chords related lessons in Your Music Learn are structured in a way that allows anyone to access the musical concepts and immediately put them into practice.
Unlike most harmony courses in which lessons are built around sheet musics, our piano lessons are all recorded on a keyboard, in order for the pupil to put immediately into practice what he/she has just learnt and be able to play Contemporary Piano straight away.

basic composition

3. Basic composition tools

A basic knowledge of composition allows anyone who wants to learn piano to build a melody on the piano and harmonize it. At the same time, in order to learn to improvise it is necessary to be able to build effective chords progressions.
For this reason in in our piano tutorial it is possible to find many videos related to this specific subject. Thanks to the hundreds of practical examples on the piano, the pupils will be able to put into practice what they have just learnt so to undestand how to play piano in an effective way.

piano accompaniment

4. Most used melody accompanying techniques

Creating arrangements and accompaniments on the piano is fundamental to be able to play without necessarily reading a sheet music. But providing a good accompaniment is important whether we’re playing a song intro or simply improvising over a chord progression.
In Your Music Learn Contemporary piano lessons you can find numerous tutorials exploring this topic in depth.

5. Most used song accompanying techniques

Have you ever seen how Elton John accompanies his own singing on the piano?

To be able to do the same it is necessary to learn to create the right accompaniment for the voice. It is also necessary to find the right coordination between voice and piano and how to use the keyboard in order to highlight the voice.
The combination of all these actions can lead to amazing achievements. Doing so, anyone can be able to sing and play his/her favourite tunes on the piano at a professional level.
To be able to learn piano in depth, I have recorded numerous piano tutorial videos dedicated to this specific subject. In the tutorials I’m showing some of the techniques used by the “greats”, that I have been also using for a long time.
